The Transparent Hypnotist » Blog Archive » The Esoteric Walford …

by Terry O’Brien

In a century that has produced a number of great stage hypnotists, from Gil Boyne and Ormond McGill, Pat Collins, the amazing Polgar and Kreskin, to Paul McKenna and Derren Brown, there is one man that outshines them all.

His name is Walford Bodie, “MD”, and he was quite the flamboyant character.

Born in 1869 as Samuel Murphy Bodie in Amberdeen, Scotland, he worked as an electrician for the Scottish National Telephone Company but eventually his side career as an illusionist became his true calling. He was a natural showman: a stage magician, sleight of hand artist, ventriloquist, and hypnotist. Among his titles was “The Electrical Wizard of the North”, the “British Edison”, “Modern Miracle Worker” and “The most Remarkable Man on Earth”.

His act consisted of a number of radical phenomena of the time period, especially electricity and stage hypnosis. Stage hypnosis as a specific art was quite new at that time (I have only found a few references from this time period explicitly using the term “stage hypnosis”, including a few books with this title) and he is the earliest stage hypnotist on record that I have been able to locate with an international reputation.

His electricity demonstrations were very showy. his act included a fake electric chair, a replica of the one that executed William Kemmler in Sing Sing in 1890 (the first prisoner to be executed by the electric chair.) Bodie, who billed himself as “The Man they could Not Electrocute”, would place himself in the chair and pass 30,000 volts through his body for the climax of his act, illuminating sixteen incandescent bulbs and two arc lamps held in his bare hands. (Electric currents with high voltages and low amperage can arc across relatively long distances but cannot overcome or cause damage to objects with even modest resistance, such as the human body.) however, in 1920, Harry Houdini arranged to obtain the real thing for Bodie. (Houdini was a great friend and correspondent of Bodie’s.)

There are no definitive records or descriptions I can find about his stage hypnosis act: what little I can discover was that he did not perform what we would expect as a modern stage hypnosis performance. his stage hypnosis act was more medical in direction, involving sensational cures, especially of paralysis. his bloodless surgery’ demonstrations utilized hypnotism and electricity (‘Bodic Force’) to cure the afflicted and the lame. He even formed the Bodie Electric Drug Company, retailing ‘Electric Life Pills’ and ‘Electric Linament’.

Lacking a medical degree, he said the initials “MD” stand for “Merrie Devil” which got him in trouble more than once. During a performance in 1909, medical students thronged the audience and pelted him with rotten fruit, eggs, and other garbage, so much so that he had to leave the stage to the chanting of “Bodie, Bodie, Quack, Quack, Quack, Quack”, wearing, as one commentator put it, “a coat of many colours”. That same year, a group of Scottish medical students took him to court to challenge his use of the initials “MD”, but, showman that he was, he turned the proceedings into another of this performances and won exoneration.

Bodie died in 1939, at the age of 70, after completing a season of performances.

  • Bodie and his signature waxed mustache was the target of a parody by Charlie Chaplin: Chaplin’s first big break in show business was in a review lead by comedian will Murray in 1906 in London, where Chaplin parodied Bodie in a performance entitled “Casey’s Court Circus”. Chaplin was 17 at the time.
  • Bodie himself campaigned against the electric chair as a means of execution, advocating the gallows, instead, as a more human method.
  • Bodie was so popular that when, in 1916, he lost his entire production equipment during WW I, he was back on tour within six months. his production company was on their way through the Mediterranean to perform in India when the ship he was traveling on was sunk. He and his wife were separated during the rescue and were not reunited for several weeks because his rescue ship was also sunk.
  • During a tour of Ireland, Bodie was named Life Governor of the town of Cork.
  • Bodie was also an author. two of his most notable publications are “The Bodie Book”, a nonfiction account of hypnosis and related paranormal subjects like telepathy and mental suggestion, and “Harley the Hypnotist”, a mystery novel involving a hypnotist detective.
  • A true Scotsman, Bodie officiated at the opening of the Royal Tarlair Golf Club in Macduff, Scotland, on April 4th, 1926 and drive the first ball on the course.

She was being stalked by the same man that killed her parents. once she had graduated high school, and moved to University things only got worse. She was left random presents, she would wake up to find her window open, small anonymous love letters would be left in her mail box, and lastly she always felt eyes on her, watching her. one day, the man finally acted, kidnapping her as she walked home from the University library.
special abilities: Karrie forces you to stare into her eyes. They capture you, curiosity forcing to stare back. her crazed look forces fear into your heart, which paralyzes you like a deer in head lights. From then on, you are hypnotized until something breaks her spell, your whole body filled with the same fear and hopelessness she has felt her entire life.

She found out he was more then a man, his red eyes eying her like she was a piece of meat. he paced back and forth as he decided what to do to her. the smell of her blood drove him insane, and all she could do was sit there, begging him to let her go. he finally decided, changing her that night, the pain almost more then she could bare. When she woke up, he was no where to be seen, leaving her there to kill the first innocent person to come along, helping her blood lust. Sense then she’s gone around on her own, quenching her thirst whenever it bothered her, trying to find a meaning in her new life.

Name: Riley Xavier

Appearance: Riley has long red hair with hazel eyes and pale skin. She is very plain looking. She is wearing a light yellow cotton v-neck t-shirt, black pants, wrist bands and black converse.

Bio: Riley’s had always been a strange child, especially while growing up in the Bahamas. She was avoided at school, and didn’t have many friends. She was teased her entire life. When she was 7, her father left herself and her mother without any notice or reason why. Riley’s mother blamed her, and she had to deal with the abuse until she was 17, when Riley’s mother committed suicide. She came home to find her laying on the ground in a puddle of her own blood.

After this, she dropped out of high school and moved into a small shack on the quiet Island of Lariya. She started to paint, becoming an underground artist to different Islands, and even eventually different countries. No one knew who she was, her paintings were just submitted by mail through her agent with the signature of ‘Rx’, the abbreviation used for prescriptions of medicine. She didn’t leave her apartment often, only to get her normal needs like food and hygiene products. She could have afforded a bigger and nicer place, but she stayed in her small and dark apartment, her small fortune slowly increasing in the bank. her entire life she had been invisible, just a person in the background. She liked it that way, people didn’t bother her anymore. She didn’t have to be afraid of being hurt.

One day at the market, she met someone. the girl had seen her around often, sense Riley only went to the same market every week for the last 6 years. She was a sweet local girl named Meredith. For a while they just spoke shortly in the market, smiling and joking with each other. Eventually, Meredith convinced Riley to go out with her. They became very good friends, although Riley was still very quiet and nervous around her, but more open then she was around others. their friendship was even growing into a bit more, before Meredith got the letter. She didn’t tell Riley about it, they didn’t speak about their lives. Riley didn’t know what Meredith did for a living, or where her family was, and Meredith didn’t know about Riley’s life either, or her small fortune. so when Meredith began to act strangely, Riley was lost on what to do. Riley met up at Meridith’s house, finding the door open and the house a wreck. She called out to her, but didn’t get an answer. Riley silently went upstairs into her bathroom, and saw her holding a piece of paper up to the mirror. She reached out for her, and the next thing she knew, Riley was standing in front of some gates in front of a palace. She looked around in fear, speaking out to the guards in front of the palace, but they didn’t speak back, they looked panicked, like they couldn’t tell where her voice was coming from. No one could see her.

Glitch: Riley can turn invisible, although her presence is often confused as a ghost. She cannot control her glitch, and she’s unsure what makes it happen. When she is invisible she can speak and touch people, they just can’t see her. If she is touching something while she changes, it will also turn invisible, but if she lets go it changes back instantly. so her clothing turns invisible with her.

Personality: Riley is very erratic, and fearful. She tends to be a bit twitchy and has a small stutter when she’s nervous. She is shy and hopeless, and is horrible at taking care of herself, let alone others. She needs a push to do anything, because if she does it alone she won’t do it at all. She has extreme abandonment issues.

Appearance Post!Wonderland: her eyes changed into a light green tint, almost see through, and her skin is more milky white then before, her veins more visible. She looks like a ghost even when she isn’t invisible.

Extra: her clothes aren’t different only because no one has ever given her new clothes. No one knows she came here with Meredith. No one sees her sense most people in Wonderland are now blind, and whenever someone does see her they mistake her as some sort of ghost or spirit. She is still in shock by everything that has happened.

Name: Sara Davidson
Age: 22
Gender: Female
Appearance: She’s 5’6 and very toned/athletic.

Occupation: Personal Trainer
Bio: Sara grew up as a military brat, the daughter of General Davidson of the United States Army. her mother died in a car crash when she was 2, leaving her in his care. he raised her well, she was a proper young lady, always excited to see her father, and very well informed of military tactics and weaponry. She wanted to be able to talk to him and relate, so he taught her as much as he could tell a young girl without scaring her. She adored him and stuck by him as well as she could, until she hit the age of 15. Sara began to rebel, to fight back. just because she was his daughter didn’t mean she had to be in the military with him. after several fights and rebellious acts against her father, she was caught by the police at a party and taken home to him drunk. This was the last straw for him, and he sent her to a military boarding school for the rest of her high school experience. She endured the punishment until she graduated, and then ran off to join the peace corp. She was sent to South America where she traveled between countries to help with their agriculture, health, and nutrition issues. When she came back, her father was waiting to greet her, but she had changed into a different women during her 3 years of service, including obtaining a very close relationship with a girl named Chelsea. They moved to New York City together, where Chelsea and Sara became a part of a group that promoted peace and protested the robots existence. Sara got a job as a personal trainer and Chelsea worked at a Community Centre for Cancer. They both attended several protests against the robots existance being in the US and in any other country.

Then the robots really did attack, and everyone Sara knew was cut off from her life. Sara’s last conversation with her father was on the phone, trying to figure out what she was supposed to do. he is currently stationed in Virginia, unable to get to Sara easily. the last thing he heard was her panicked voice before their phones disconnected. Sara and Chelsea are now on the run, trying to survive and find out what to do next. should she try to get to Virginia to her father’s protection or should she stay put to see if he comes to her?

Equipment: A semi-automatic pistol and a couple grenades she stole for an emergency situation. She also has a large lucky dagger for a last resort situation that she got from South America and a submachine gun she found on a dead guy. She feels strange using it but its her easiest and strongest weapon.
